Challenge
An Army information system had grown into a large application with many features nobody used. Those unused features drove up inputs and outputs, which suited neither the system’s users nor a cloud billing model that charges for data on demand. The system also ran on decade-old technology, some of it no longer supported or patched, which created significant security exposure. For users it was slow and often unresponsive, and it worked only through older versions of a legacy browser.
Our Approach
CEdge used an Agile process to modernize the system rather than simply move it.
Refine requirements with the users
The team worked in two-week sprints with a daily scrum and weekly meetings and demonstrations for stakeholders. Showing working software every week let the customer refine requirements as they learned what they actually needed, which is how the unused features came out.
Rearchitect on a modern stack
We rebuilt the application using AngularJS on the front end, Microsoft Web API for services, and Microsoft SQL Server with Entity Framework for data, replacing the decade-old technology.
Results
- A rearchitected application on a supported technology stack, replacing unsupported and unpatched components
- A leaner design shaped by weekly demonstrations rather than carried-over features
- A modern web interface in place of one that worked only through older browser versions
- A system positioned for the cloud, with data usage that fits an on-demand billing model
